In the electric power distribution industry, a hot stick is an insulated pole, usually made of fiberglass, used by electric utility workers when engaged on live-line working on energized high-voltage electric power lines, to protect them from electric shock. Depending on the tool attached to the end of the hot stick, it is possible to test for voltage, tighten nuts and bolts, apply tie wires (twisted lengths of ductile wire which fasten the running cable to its supporting insulators), open and close switches, replace fuses, lay insulating sleeves on wires, and perform various other tasks while not exposing the crew to a large risk of electric shock.

Hot sticks are made in different lengths, from simple 3-foot (1 m) sticks to 30-foot (9 m) telescoping models. Because the fiberglass provides electrical insulation, the hot stick allows utility workers to perform operations on power lines safely without de-energizing them or while the state of the power line is not yet known. This is essential because certain operations (such as opening or closing combination fuse/switches) must occasionally be performed on an energized line. Additionally, after a fault occurs, the exact state of a line may not be certain; in this case, for reasons of crew safety, the utility workers must treat the line as though it were energized until it can be proven that it is not and safety ground cables can be applied to the line (so that the line is guaranteed to remain grounded/earthed while maintenance is performed upon it). If power tools are fitted to the end of the hot stick, they are usually powered hydraulically rather than electrically because, like the fiberglass of the hot stick, the hydraulic fluid is also a good insulator. The hydraulic power is commonly supplied from the bucket truck (cherry picker or aerial work platform) supporting the workers.

The hot stick not only electrically insulates the worker from the energized conductor, it provides physical separation from the device being operated, to reduce the chances of burns which might result from electrical arcing if there is a malfunction of the device being operated.

Why to use Discharge Rod?
A discharge rod is a necesarry equipment when it comes to safety while live working(maintenance work in electrical distribution and transmission systems).
After shutdown and disconnecting the Air Break Switches there still might be either residual current in the line due to presence of transformer and other electrical equipments or due to reverse current or back current from home appliances like generator or invertor or leakage current numerous reasons.
Due to the above reasons it is still not safe to work on the electric line.
Residual current, reverse current and leakage current is present in lines even after shut down.
To protect ourselves from current we use a device which we call as Discharge Rod.

What is Earth Discharge Rod/Discharging Rod/ Earthing Rod?
Discharge Rod is a safety device which is used to discharge a bare conductor. That is to remove electrostatic charge from a Disconnected Circuit.

Parts of Discharge Rod
  • Top End: The top end of the discharge rod consists of a clamp which is made of robust cast aluminum which is generally called alligator clamp. The clamp consists of extra holes to that Earth wire and other live working equipment like high voltage detectors can be attached to it. You can also find a copper hook instead of cast aluminum clamp.
  • Highly insulated Rod: The top end clamp is connected to a rod. This rod is highly insulated generally made of FRP Material (Fiber Reinforced Plastic). This rod also has rubber grip on it. Length of rod can be adjusted as per use from 6 feet to 18 feet.
  • Earth Wire: A copper wire is connected to the top end clamp for earthing purposes. For 11kV and 33kV Discharge Rod 6 sq mm ISI marked copper wire is used. Normally the size of copper wire used for earthing ranges from 6 sq. mm to 10 sq. mm. The length of earth wire is 10 meter or can be ordered as per requirement.
Where to use Discharge Rod?
While working on a pole in a circuit, after closing the feeder line and operating the Air Break in open position, connect the discharge rod on the output side of the transformer and on the line subsequent to the pole where the work needs to be done.
